After multiple delays and heightened anticipation, Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Akhanda 2 finally storms into theatres with Thursday night premieres, carrying the massive expectations set by the blockbuster first part. Directed by Boyapati Sreenu, this high-voltage sequel brings back the divine fury of Akhanda, but the question remains—does it surpass the original or struggle under its own weight?
Story: A Nation Under Threat
When the death of his son pushes General Chan, a ruthless Chinese military chief, into madness, he launches a dangerous biowarfare attack aimed at crippling India. As chaos spreads and the nation searches for answers, Akhanda (Balakrishna) steps forward to stop the catastrophe.
The film follows his journey to uncover the cure, confront the masterminds, and erase the threat before it wipes out millions. While the premise is grand, the execution wavers between predictability and occasional brilliance.
Balakrishna’s Performance: The Soul of the Film
Balakrishna once again proves why this character belongs solely to him. His screen presence, fiery dialogue delivery, and spiritual intensity are the strongest pillars of the film.
The makers cleverly incorporate the ageing of Akhanda, and Balakrishna matches it with controlled voice modulation and body language. His second role, though introduced with style, receives limited focus this time around.
Every time he appears on screen, the energy rises—making him the film’s biggest saving grace.
Direction & Screenplay: High Ambition, Mixed Execution
Boyapati Sreenu opens the film on an intriguing note, extending Akhanda’s arc in a promising manner. But soon after, the narrative slips into familiar and predictable territory.
- The biowarfare subplot feels overly simplified and inspired more by social media rumours than authentic research.
- The Chinese antagonist setup appears tacky and lacks the menace required for a story of this scale.
- Predictability becomes the film’s biggest hurdle. Major twists, emotional beats, and action points feel expected, reducing the tension.
However, the interval block still packs a punch—a signature Boyapati moment that reignites interest. The second half tries to raise the stakes with a new character and layered emotions, but the impact remains uneven.
Performances by Others
A host of familiar faces appear throughout the film, but unfortunately, most are underutilized.
- Aadi Pinisetty gets a promising introduction but is shockingly wasted.
- Samyuktha Menon barely gets anything meaningful beyond a song appearance.
- Harshali Malhotra (of Bajrangi Bhaijaan fame) gets some good moments and performs sincerely.
- Saswata Chatterjee, too, is left without memorable material.
Technical Aspects
- Thaman’s background score, though aggressive, fails to match the magic of Part 1.
- Cinematography is effective in grounded moments but struggles during VFX-heavy sequences.
- Overuse of fast cuts dilutes the clarity of major action blocks.
- Dialogues sometimes slip into political commentary rather than character-driven emotion.
Akhanda 2 delivers powerful moments, strong action, and Balakrishna’s electrifying presence, but the screenplay lacks freshness and emotional depth.
Fans of Balayya will enjoy his roaring performance, but for others, it remains a moderately engaging action-drama that works in parts but not as a complete package.
