In a record-breaking auction this week, the unique VIP vehicle registration number HR88B8888 was sold for an astonishing ₹1.17 crore to a Haryana businessman. The fancy number fetched the highest bid during the latest round of online auctions held by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

Online Bidding Saw Intense Competition
The bidding for HR88B8888 opened at a base price of ₹50,000 and closed on November 26. The auction, conducted online between 1 pm and 5 pm, allows participants to bid on premium and fancy registration numbers every week.
To enter the auction, bidders must pay a ₹1,000 participation fee and a ₹10,000 security deposit, as per the transport department’s rules.

Businessman From Charkhi Dadri Outbids All
According to PTI, the winning bidder is a businessman from the Badhra sub-division of Charkhi Dadri. He belongs to a village in Bhiwani district but has chosen to remain unnamed.
He admitted he had no fixed budget in mind when he entered the auction.
> “I liked the number and just went ahead,” he said, adding that he had not expected the bidding to escalate to ₹1.17 crore.
Surprisingly, he has not yet decided which vehicle will carry the new VIP number.>
“We are figuring that out,” he added.
Bidder Gets 5 Days to Deposit AmountAs per MoRTH’s rules, the successful bidder has five days to submit the full bid amount. Once the payment is cleared, the number will officially be allotted.

Who Is the Buyer?
The businessman runs a transport business and also owns a software company. He is currently developing a transport-related mobile app aimed at commercial logistics, which is still in the early development stage.
